Why is it so essential for my child to learn English?

An early introduction to the English language is possibly one of the greatest and important gifts you can give your child, towards a successful and prosperous future. It is an exciting and incredible thing to just take a minute and try and imagine what career and social interests your small child will one day hold … could it be Science? Computers and technology? Business? Music? In today’s world there are widespread opportunities but one main language - English.

We believe that the native language of a country is very special and incredibly important. It brings with it culture, and historical background. However, it is also important that chances are not lost. Growing up in a world which is fast becoming a global village, your child will soon come to realise that English is the language of global opportunity.

My child is still very young. He doesn´t need to start so early.

There are in fact many reasons why it is advisable that a person begins a second language within the first years of childhood. Linguistic research concludes that the younger a child is exposed to a new language, with the help of a native speaker, the greater the probability of acquiring proficiency, and native pronunciation. The early years, up to the age of 6, are a crucial period, sometimes referred to as a "window of opportunity". Young children simply have a natural ability to learn language in an effortless way, free from the concerns of grammatical structure, translation etc. The brain does the work for them. It is within these early years that the brain is most receptive for language. Very importantly, it is believed that it is possible to develop the receptivity to language during this time, benefiting the individual later in life, when learning a third or fourth language. However, if the connections in the brain are not developed, the possibilities are most likely lost.

Will there be pressure put upon my child?

We firmly believe that the learning process of a child can only be nurtured when the child feels happy and comfortable in his/her environment. On no account would a child be forced to say a word in English, or do something which would make him/her feel uncomfortable. Our methods are specifically orientated around creating a fun, positive experience for your child.

We understand that in the same way as some children crawl, and walk earlier than others, so the speed of English-learning can vary from child to child. Every child is valued for their own individuality, and given equal attention. We concentrate on the principle that the children should learn the language naturally, through first hand experiences, in a rich and lively environment. We offer fun and enthusiasm. The children are given support and respect. A strong emphasis is put on giving encouragement, and lots of praise.

Will there be further benefits for my child’s development?

Children can benefit further on an educational and social level.
  • It is widely thought that bilinguals have a much more creative way of thinking, which benefits their cognitive skills. They think in a far more flexible and versatile manner. Research from numerous countries shows that there is a tendency for bilinguals to score noticeably higher in IQ tests, compared with monolinguals. This dispels any idea that learning a second language could be intellectually confusing for a child.

  • Emphasis is put on creative performance and interaction. This can be extremely effective in supporting a child’s self-belief and self-confidence.

  • Through interaction during the sessions, children develop an awareness for their peers, and are introduced to the concepts of sharing and caring –please, thank you etc.

  • Children are made aware of the existence of more than one language, thus promoting positive attitudes to other languages, and interest and acceptance of different cultures.

  • New research suggests that speaking more than one language from an early age can help protect the brain from age-related decline.
